Paraguay is carrying out the Strategic Plan for Tourism Meetings with the objective of positioning Paraguay as an international destination for meetings and in 5 years place it among the world’s 35 most chosen destinations for conducting meetings. The strategic decision to refocus from tourism driven MICE to a direct involvement with industry, has lead SENATUR to address the global trend of corporate tourism is itself an industry that generates an important economic impact on the destinations.
MICExchange spoke to Ms Marcela Bacigalupo the Executive Secretary of the National Secretariat of Tourism SENATUR, (the National Tourism Institution for Paraguay). Ms Bacigalupo gave an enthusiastic welcome to Latin speaking Event Planners to consider what she sees at the MICE heart of South America as a rapidly emerging destination of choice in Latin South America.
Ms Bacigalupo stated, “Paraguay is a young country with a lot of potential in tourism and investment. The development of the MICE industry in Paraguay offers not only economic growth but an opportunity for Latin speaking event planners to capitalise on a strongly emerging destination.”
She spoke of the “Ambassadors Program” that seeks an alliance with organizations and institutions to represent Paraguay in international conferences and events. SENATUR has been working on identifying congresses that fit with Paraguay’s offer of a vibrant cultural and stable economy. The agency is working towards the formation of bureaus in the expanding areas of Ciudad del Este and Encarnación.
Direct Flights make Paraguay strategically located in the heart of South America, its capital Asunción, is less than 4 flight hours from the most important cities of South America, such as Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago de Chile, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Montevideo and Lima. Through Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima and Panama, Asunción connects to the rest of Latin America, Europe, the United States and other countries of the World.
Asunción has an infrastructure of venues for congress and events in luxury national or international chains hotels, for up to 1,200 attending people. The modern Conmebol Convention Center offers a capacity for 3.000 people and the cities hotel capacity is more than 3,000 rooms in the 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. The hotel industry has shown sustained growth of over 35% in the last 5 years, and for 2016 another 5 additional hotels with be added, with about 800 additional rooms, in the new corporate center of the city.

The National Tourism Ministry (SENATUR) works to promote and integrate the various tourism industry in Paraguay and collaborates with the Paraguay Convention & Visitors Bureau.
